Mercedes Benz E-class W123 Development By BVP1982 The Mercedes-Benz W123 cars were produced from 1976 through 1985. The W123 models surpassed their predecessor, the W114/W115 "stroke-8" models, as the most successful Mercedes, selling over 2.5 million cars, before being replaced by the W124 after 1985. Also, the additional, smaller range of Mercedes-Benz W201 models was introduced in 1982. As usual, model names were related to engine sizes, type of engine and chassis type • D for Diesel, • E for Einspritzung (fuel injection) • Lang for Long Wheelbase • T for Transport and Tourism (estate/station wagon) • C for Coupé Mercedes-Benz introduced the W123 four-door versions in January, 1976[2]. While there was some technical similarities to their predecessors, the new models were larger in wheelbase and exterior dimensions. The styling was also updated, although stylistic links with the /8 while were maintained. Initially, all models except 280/280E featured quad unequal-size round headlights and the latter large rectangular units. When facelifted these units became standard across the range. All /8 engines were carried over, with the 3 liter 5-cylinder diesel model being renamed from 240D 3.0 to 300D (as it had already been called before in North American markets). The only new engine was the 250's 2525 cc inline-six (Type M123, a short-stroke version of the 2.8 liter six Type M110) that replaced the old 2496 cc Type M114 six. In the spring of 1976, a Coupé version was introduced on a shorter wheelbase than the saloon (2710 mm (106.7 in) versus 2795 mm (110 in)) for the saloon. This W123C/CE was available as a 230C (later 230CE) and as a 280C/CE in most markets; in North America there were additional 300CD versions with naturally aspirated, later turbocharged 3 liter diesel engines. From August, 1977, long wheelbase versions (3425 mm (134.8 in)) were produced. These were available as 7/8 seater saloons with works bodies or as a chassis with complete front body clip, the latter serving as the base for ambulance and hearse bodies by external suppliers like Binz or Miesen. These "Lang" versions could be ordered as 240D, 300D and 250 models. At the Frankfurt Auto Show in September, 1977 the W123T estate was introduced; the T in the model designation stood for "Touring and Transport". All engines derivative except "200TD" weravailable in the range. T production began in March, 1978 in Mercedes' Bremen factory. In early 1979, the diesel models power output was increased; power rose from 55 PS (54 hp/40 kW) to 60 PS (59 hp/44 kW) in the 200D, from 65 PS (64 hp/48 kW) to 72 PS (71 hp/53 kW) in the 240D and from 80 PS (79 hp/59 kW) to 88 PS (87 hp/65 kW) in the 300D; at the same time, the 220D went out of production. The first Mercedes turbo diesel production car appeared in September, 1979. This was the 300 TD Turbodiesel, available with automatic transmission only. In most markets, the turbocharged 5-cylinder 3 liter diesel engine (Type OM617) was offered only in the T body style, while in North America it was also available in sedan/saloon and coupe guise. June 1980 saw the introduction of new 4-cylinder petrol engines (Type M102). A new 2 liter four with shorter stroke replaced the old M115, a fuel-injected 2.3 liter version of this engine (in 230E/TE/CE) the old carburetted 230. Both engines were more powerful than their predecessors. In 1980/81 the carburetted 280 versions went out of production; the fuel-injected 280E continued to be offered. In September, 1982, all models received a mild facelift. The rectangular headlights, previously fitted only to the 280/280E, were standardized across the board, as was power steering. Since February, 1982, an optional 5-speed manual transmission was available in all models (except 300 TDT). W123 production ended in November, 1985. Most popular single models were the 240D (455,000 built), the 230E (442,000 built) and the 200D (378,000 built). W123 introduced innovations including ABS (optional from August, 1980), a retractable steering column and an airbag for the driver (optional from 1982). Available options included MB-Tex (Mercedes-Benz Texturized Punctured Vinyl) upholstery or velour or leather upholstery, interior wood trim, right hand side exterior mirror (LHD models, standard on T models), 5-speed manual transmission (European market only), 4-speed automatic transmission (standard in turbodiesel models), power windows with rear-seat switch cut-outs, vacuum powered central locking, rear-facing extra seats (station wagon only), Standheizung (prestart timer controller engine heating), self locking differential, sun roof, air conditioning, climate control, headlamp wipers (European market only), Tempomat (cruise control), power steering (standard after 1982/08), seat heating, CO converter (available from 1984 for California only, from fall (autumn) 1984 also in Germany for the 230E of which one thousand were built). Mercedes Benz A-class Commercial "Christina Aguilera" By BVP1982 The 2009 A-Class features redesigned front and rear bumpers, new tail lamps and headlights, new grille, new exterior mirrors, a restyled interior design and new upholsteries and colors. The 2009 A-Class was released alongside the refreshed 2009 M-Class and B-Class. A four-day, seven-country tour which officially introduced the car culminated in an event in Milan, in the Castello Sforzesco, where all the touring units were received by a myriad of European personalities from music, fashion, sport and movies. Armani presented a fashion show and Christina Aguilera did a live performance of her song "Hello", composed exclusively for the occasion. The W169 advertising campaign included television spots with Christina Aguilera, Giorgio Armani and Boris Becker. Sales of the W169 were targeted at 50,000 units in 2004. Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing, Mercedes Car Group, said that target had been reached even before vehicles arrived in dealer showrooms. DaimlerChrysler invested EUR 900 million in developing the Rastatt plant where the A-Class is produced, and created 1600 new jobs (for a total of 4700). A further 600 people work on the industrial estate at the plant site. In 1999, Mercedes Benz opened, in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais (Brazil), its first factory in South America dedicated to passenger cars, with an investment of USD 840 million and 10,000 employees. The factory initially produced A-Class and C-Class models, assembling them from pieces manufactured in Germany. The target for the cars was regional markets (from Argentina to Mexico) with modifications made to the cars to suit local conditions, like a protection for the motor base for the mostly poor roads in South America. In 2005 the factory stopped production of A-Class cars. Mercedes-Benz has made a number of confusing announcements - first that a "weak Euro" could have produce costs problems and later that the "fall of the Dollar" will cause the enterprise to not be profitable. According to some analyses, Mercedes-Benz considers the creation of the A-Class to have reduced its prestige in Europe, and the company has concentrated its efforts on its larger and more profitable vehicle lines. Mercedes Benz E-class Development By BVP1982 The Mercedes-Benz W211 series entered production in 2002. They are sold under the E-Class model names. The W211 models replaced the W210 E-Class models. The W211 E-Class continues the line's push upmarket. The W211-based W219 CLS-Class was new for 2005. In 2001 Mercedes made a facelift for the W210 which began the launch of the W211. Although this was a complete facelift for the sedan, the wagon retains the rear of the W210 vehicles, except that it is slightly more rounded. Current (MY 08') E-Class Saloons (Sedans) and Estates (wagon) variants All prices are MSRP for cars sold in the US market. Those sold in other part of the world only will be priced by the starting MSRP in Germany (due to the full range of available engines there) in Euros as well as in British Pounds. Engine size is listed in CC (cubic centimetre). Figures are for automatic transmition models only, however manuals are available on most models. Models are available in Estate (or T-modell) variants. The E63 AMG is a new model for 2007 offered in Sedan and Wagon body styles. It features an AMG designed and built 6,208-cc, DOHC, 32-valve V-8. This engine has a high-pressure die-cast alloy cylinder block with twin-wire arc spray coated running surfaces. It develops net horse power of 507 hp (378 kW) @ 6,800 rpm and net torque 465 lb·ft (630 N·m) @ 5,200 rpm. Compression ratio is 11.3:1. According to many auto journalists, the E63 AMG is the quickest production sports sedan in the world. Both the Sedan and Wagon reach 60 mph (100 km/h) from a stanstill in 4 seconds flat. The main reason for the power upgrade from the E55 AMG is directly related to BMW's introduction of the 500 hp (370 kW) M5, and the release of the 2007 Audi RS6, boasting in excess of 550 hp (410 kW). Mercedes Benz E55 AMG vs. Ferrari By BVP1982 Launched in 2002, the W211 E-Class was a huge improvement over the previous model and was rated as a substantially better vehicle Launched in 2002, the W211 E-Class was a huge improvement over the previous model and was rated as a substantially better vehicle than its long time rival BMW 5-series (which had previously been rated as better in all areas). The W211-based W219 CLS-Class 4-door coupe was introduced in 2005 to attract younger customers. In many Northern-European countries the E-Class is used as a taxi and so the image is not viewed as being exclusive enough along with its traditionally 'old-man's car' image. The W211 E-Class was facelifted in 2006 to freshen up its appearance and primarily to improve quality and technical aspects of the car. The largest engine in the E-class range is the E500 (badged E550 in the U.S.) which had its engine size increased from 5 litres to 5.5 litres in 2006 along with the facelift. There is also an AMG model badged E63 AMG. Mercedes-Benz introduced their BlueTec Diesel system to the E-Class at the 2006 North American International Auto Show as the E320 CDI BlueTec. BlueTec is a two-phase system for cleaning diesel emissions. The first phase makes the E320 CDI legal in 45 of the 50 United States (plus the District of Columbia). The second phase uses urea for further reductions to meet the more stringent standards of California, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, and Vermont. Sales of E320 CDI BlueTec began in autumn 2006 as a 2007 model, but 50-state legal models with urea injection will only be introduced in 2009 model year. The W211 model of the E-Class became somewhat infamous for its poor reliability. Consumer Reports classified the W211 model's reliability as "poor," its lowest rating, and declared it one of the "least reliable luxury cars", but the newer 2007 models have rebound on quality, with JD Power giving the E class, the best in the mid size luxury segment award.
