How to Solve a Rubik's Cube - Clarification of First Layer By RobH0629 Link to Step 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yU-Ew... Link to Step 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOkcgD... In this video, I go through how to finish solving the white cross (after you have placed 4 white edges around the yellow center) and also how to place the 4 white bottom corners. Please watch my Steps 1 and 2 of my How to solve a Rubik's Cube tutorial on my channel playlist prior to watching this video! I give a little more insight into why we are doing some of the moves we do. You must make sure that you match EACH white edge piece FIRST before flipping it onto the white side. If you do NOT match each piece, you will not see the upside down T's at the end of the second step. For the second step, we are looking for white corners in the TOP layer which have a white sticker on the SIDE. Once you have found one, you must match it diagonally with its center color. Is white facing left or right? If facing left: Li Ui L If facing right: R U Ri Be sure to hold the center color you have matched on the FRONT face. To fix a corner piece that has a white sticker on TOP, first make sure you position the corner piece above an empty spot (does not have a correcly placed corner). Then place that corner piece directly in front on the right, then do: R U2 Ri You can now match that corner piece and place it down using the 3 move sequences. How to Solve a Rubik's Cube - Step 2 - Bottom White Corners By RobH0629 Link to Step 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTPOqm... Do you NOT see the upside down T's? Other Problems? Then Watch this clarification video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zg5lKh... You must look on the top layer for corners which have a white color on the side (not top or bottom faces). Once you have found (or corrected using the R T180 Ri), you must match the other adjacent color to white (not on top again, but on the side) with its corresponding color diagonally. Now hold the center of the color that you just matched the white corner diagonally with and the white sticker should either be on the left or right face. Then you must perform the following moves: If white facing left, do Li Ti L (Li = left quarter turn counter-clockwise, L = left quarter turn clockwise), If white facing right, do R T Ri. You must do this for all four corners. IMPORTANT: When fixing corner pieces which have white facing UP,you must place it above the last empty corner space on bottom before doing the R T180 Ri or Li T180 L moves. IMPORTANT: you should NEVER be looking at the white color when you are placing it down, you should always be holding the center piece of the other color on the side with white while placing the corner piece. After you have placed all 4 BOTTOM WHITE CORNERS, you should see upside down COLOR T's on the 4 sides of the cube (not top or bottom). If you do NOT have these T's, that means you DID NOT match the corner pieces properly with its side color BEFORE using the 3 moves (up, towards you, down). Match the color on the ADJACENT SIDE of WHITE with its respective center. Then, while holding that center towards you, you must see whether the corner piece is now on the LEFT or RIGHT of that center piece. If on RIGHT, do R T Ri. If on LEFT, do the Li Ti L move. Watch the video for demonstration. ATTENTION: I WOULD LIKE PEOPLE TO LET ME KNOW WHETHER THEY WERE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THIS STEP, SINCE IT IS A LITTLE TRICKY. How to Solve a Rubik's Cube - Step 1 - White Cross By RobH0629 In my tutorial, I will teach you how to solve a Rubik's Cube (regular 3x3)using 7 steps, which I explain in detail. My videos are longer than others you may find, but I feel that by spending more time with you for each step, you will understand it better than if I rush through it like those other videos. Although my videos are longer, it will pay off in the shorter amount of time you spend solving your cube. Other methods tend to use repetitive moves, not letting you understand how the cube works very well and wasting too much time and too many moves. I taught quite a few people this method in college, and also family members and friends who were able to solve it relatively quickly once they understood the method. Once you have memorized the algorithms and also understand the method I use, you can solve the cube in ABOUT 1-2 MINUTES WITH PRACTICE. Go here to see my Rubiks.com page with links to ALL my tutorials!! http://www.rubiks.com/Academy/3x3%204... This is the first step of the Tutorial for solving the cube. THE SECOND STEP IS ON MY CHANNEL PLAYLIST AND ALSO IN THE VIDEO RESPONSES SECTION OF THIS VIDEO. Link for Step 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOkcgD... Check out this video of a 7 YEAR OLD who solved the cube in under 3 minutes using my tutorial! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6dEUb... It involves first placing four white edge pieces around the yellow center piece. You must then match each individual edge piece with its side color and flip it until it is matched with both the white and side colors. *If you are HAVING DIFFICULTY getting the four white edge pieces around the yellow center, please SEE MY Step 1 b video, which gives further examples which should prove to be useful and give extra help. Also, please do not ever hesitate to ask me ANY questions at all about the cube or if you have any comments or problems. I am ALWAYS glad to help. If you are using this method, I can GUARANTEE that I can explain and help you with anything you need to know as long as you provide me the information about your cube. Send long questions to my inbox and I will try to get back to you A.S.A.P. THANK YOU FOR WATCHING! I would like to thank Lars Petrus and also Tyson Mao along with Jessica Fridrich for allowing me to visualize the cube in a totally new way. My method basically incorporates strategies and techniques in both Tyson Mao's and also Lars Petrus' methods, making my method unique in itself. My method has been able to help numerous people solve their cubes, along with some family members and personal friends of mine, so I know it can work for you too! How to Solve a Rubik's Cube Faster - Introduction to F2L By RobH0629 In this tutorial, I explain different ways we can optimize our solve times, however, focus on the easier of the F2L (First Two Layers) cases. These cases should give you an idea of how to Solve a Rubik's Cube Faster once you have practiced a bit. Some ways of becoming faster, these are broken down into two categories: Physical: - Buying a Speedcube (many speedcubers, including myself recommend Type A) - Lubricate your cube. I recommend CRC Heavy Duty Silicone, but I have also heard from various speedcubers that Jig-A-Loo works well also. - Practice Finger Tricks. You can't go very far moving each face with your entire hand, so exercise those pointer fingers! Mental: - Memorization of different algorithms, e.g. F2L algorithms, OLL, PLL, etc. - Understanding how the cube works. You need to know what you can and cannot do. When you mess up the cross, you need to be sure to fix it. When lifting pieces or "hiding" pieces (in this tutorial), you need to be careful not to break up other pieces, etc. In THIS tutorial, I will mainly focus on explaining different types of F2L cases in which the corner and the edge piece it needs to match up with are on the TOP/UP layer. I explain how to match pieces up, hide corners, hide edges, and explain the importance of the "Simplest" F2L case. I hope that this tutorial gives you some new insight into the world of speedcubing. If you enjoy this video, please rate 5 stars, comment, and subscribe so you can know when I release more tutorials/videos! How to Solve a Rubik's Cube - Step 7 - Finishing the Cube By RobH0629 In this step, we perform the Allan, a 9 move algorithm which rotates the top layer edge pieces in a counter-clockwise direction. After that, the cube should be done! The Algorithm we must know for this step is: L180 Ti B Fi L180 Bi F Ti L180 (rotates last 3 edges counter-clockwise) *****Please NOTE that if you have 2 sides completed at any time when doing this algorithm, it is because you have at one time had pieces removed or pop out of your cube. You must remove and switch these pieces or you cannot solve your cube***** Official/Standard Notation is: L2 Ui B Fi L2 Bi F Ui L2 "Reverse" Allan: (rotates last 3 pieces clockwise, put the completed side on the LEFT) R2 U Bi F R2 B Fi U R2 You must make sure that when you perform this step, that the COMPLETED side is on the RIGHT face. The LEFT face then becomes the side OPPOSITE the completed face. If you do NOT have a completed side, then any side can be the LEFT side as long as the yellow is on top and white on bottom. You will see that when the completed side is on the right face, the piece in the front upper layer edge position will be moved to the back face, the back face piece will go to the left face, and the left face piece will go to the front face (*Please watch video to completely understand*). THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH FOR THE POSITIVE COMMENTS! I am so glad that I was able to help so many people solve the cube. I put a lot of time into making the tutorial beginner friendly and was glad that my method was easy to follow from what I've heard. MY 4X4 AND 5X5 TUTORIALS ARE NOW COMPLETED!! How to Solve a Rubik's Cube - Step 6 - Top Corners By RobH0629 Link to Step 7: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q195Sq... This step we will arrange the top corners so that they are in the correct positions. This is the second to last step of solving the cube. The algorithm we must know is. Ri F Ri B180 R Fi Ri B180 R180 Official/Standard Notation: Ri F Ri B2 R Fi Ri B2 R2 **NOTE** A 180 degree turn is the same no matter what direction you turn the cube (clockwise or counter-clockwise). **NOTE** There is about a 1/6 chance that this step will solve your cube entirely!! That occurs if all of your top edges are already positioned correctly. Consider yourself lucky :-) But move on to learn Step 7 anyway. Looking at the cube's top layer, we must find two adjacent CORNER pieces which have the same color. When you find a side which has those two same-color corner pieces, that side becomes the BACK (B) side of the cube for the algorithm. *NOTE* If ALL SIDES have corners which have the SAME color, YOU can SKIP this step and move on to Step 7 *** If you do NOT have any same color corner pieces, then any side can be the back side, AS LONG AS the yellow face is on top and white is on bottom. NOTE: If you have two adjacent corner pieces which are the same color and also an edge piece in between them which is also the same color, please do not get confused and think you are ready for step 7. Step 6 is to correct ALL corners so that they are basically in the correct position and matched correctly to its 3 centers, which are specified by its 3 colors it has. Do not try to do step 7 unless your cube looks like either of the two cubes in the beginning of step 7. How to Solve a Rubik's Cube - Step 5 - Complete Top Face By RobH0629 Link to Step 6: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywae7J... This step involves going from the yellow cross on top to a completed yellow solid color on the top face. It requires that you position the cube in SPECIFIC ways (please refer to positioning the cube below) before performing the given algorithm: R T Ri T R T180 Ri Official/Standard Notation: R U Ri U R U2 Ri **Memorization Tip** - The algorithm is pretty much R and T repeated. I like to make a sentence out of the algorithms and say them aloud while I perform them. The sentence for this algorithm could be "Right Top Right... Top right... Top Top Right" (pauses included when you say it). Positioning the Cube: a) If you have NO (0)yellow corner piece(s) next to the yellow cross on the top face, you are to rotate the entire cube until there is a yellow corner piece on the UPPER RIGHT CORNER of the LEFT FACE. b) If you have ONE (1) yellow corner piece next to the yellow cross on the top face, you are to rotate the entire cube until THAT piece on is in the BOTTOM LEFT CORNER OF THE TOP FACE. c) If you have TWO (2) yellow corner pieces next to the yellow cross on the top face (does not matter which corners), you are to rotate the entire cube until there is a yellow corner piece on the UPPER LEFT CORNER of the FRONT FACE. d)**IF you have 3 (THREE) corner pieces next to the cross, then YOU MUST HAVE AT ONE POINT EITHER TAKEN THE CUBE APART OR A PIECE(S) POPPED OUT AND YOU ACCIDENTALLY PUT IT BACK INCORRECTLY OR POSSIBLY MOVED STICKERS ON THE CUBE. This is NOT a case that EVER happens when solving a normal or brand new cube, I can guarantee you that. I have solved the cube hundreds if not thousands of times and have never came across that case unless I physically flip the corner myself. You can see all 41 possibilities at http://www.ws.binghamton.edu/fridrich... and you will not see such a case. IF YOU HAVE THIS CASE, then the only thing you can do is to manually fix the 4th piece, which is not matched with the others. AGAIN... the only normal cases are either 0, 1, 2, or 4 corner pieces next to the cross!! ********SO IF YOU HAVE 3 CORNER PIECES next to the YELLOW cross, you must physically POP OUT that corner piece and FLIP it so that YELLOW is on TOP (with the other 3). Otherwise, you will not be able to solve the cube completely.*********** *NOTE*: You will most likely have to perform this algorithm a few times. YOU MUST rotate the cube after EACH TIME you perform the algorithm depending on how many top YELLOW CORNER pieces are next to the CROSS. If you just keep it positioned the same way, it will take more steps to finish the top face OR it will NOT finish the top face at all... So please watch the ENTIRE video and the procedure I go over to position the cube. How to Solve a Rubik's Cube - Step 3b Answer - Swapped Edges By RobH0629 For step 3, I tell you to look on the top layer EDGE positions for edge pieces which DO NOT HAVE YELLOW on them. But occasionally, you may notice that the middle edges have not all been placed correctly and there are NO pieces up top that do not have yellow. In this video, I will demonstrate a case which one of my viewers spikyspanky1 came across. Other people have also mentioned that they experienced a similar situation. Hope this helps those who may come across a case like this one. How to Solve a Rubik's Cube - Step 4 - Top Cross By RobH0629 Link to Step 5 - Complete the Top Face http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnCh0b... A tutorial on how to solve the top cross. The algorithm we must know for this step is: F T R Ti Ri Fi. (i = the inverse move or counter-clockwise a quarter turn) Official/Standard Notation: F U R Ui Ri Fi *NOTE* There are obviously many different algorithms for solving the cube, especially the last layer of the Rubik's Cube. The algorithms I have chosen are the ones which produce results and patterns that I feel are easiest for a beginner to recognize and memorize. I also use the letter T for the "Top" or "Up" face, but please note that U is the "official" letter for the Upper face. This is really irrelevant as far as performing the algorithm, as long as you know when to turn the top face, you can call it whatever you like. Looking on the top face, after the bottom two layers are completed, you should see one of FOUR different patterns. IMPORTANT**For this step, the YELLOW CORNER pieces do NOT matter. We are ONLY looking at YELLOW EDGE pieces and also the center yellow piece on top. The four different patterns for the top yellow face are: One yellow center piece, a horizontal line, an L shape, or a cross. **IMPORTANT** The cube must be held in certain ways in order to perform the algorithm, so please view the video diagram to make sure you are performing the move correctly.
