Although the cover only lists the second date, it's obvious, that material from the first was used, as "It Doesn't Matter Two" was only played on the 9th. That song was replaced by "Sister Of Night" the next day (and included as a bonus track on disc 2). Many fans were disappointed to see the popular song "Clean" (a regular on the tour, played on the first night in Paris) not included (no live version is officially released of the song to this date), Condemnation (from the second night, rarely performed in 2001, with several live versions previously available) taking its place in the film. Passano gli anni e i Depeche Mode non sembrano risentirne affatto; al contrario, dal ritorno nel 1997 con "Ultra" e col tour mondiale dell'anno successivo per promuovere la raccolta "The Singles 1986-88", la band sembra vivere un periodo di seconda giovinezza, che ha consentito loro di aggiungere due ulteriori, magnifici tasselli alla propria discografia e registrare quella che fino ad oggi è la loro migliore esibizione dal vivo ad esser stata immortalata su supporto digitale. Stiamo parlando proprio di quella contenuta in questo doppio DVD. Registrata nel 2001 presso lo stracolmo Palais Omnisports di Paris Bercy (16.000 spettatori paganti), "One Night in Paris" è stato realizzato sotto l'accurata direzione artistica e regia dell'olandese Anton Corbijn, che festeggia l'ultradecennale collaborazione con la band realizzando un DVD di altissima qualità, perfetto sotto ogni aspetto. Il pubblico parigino freme, ed ecco entrare prima Fletch e i sessionist e infine Martin, che esegue un'intro strumentale sul tema dell'ultima hit "Dream on", un preambolo gradito a cui segue l'ingresso a dir poco trionfale di Dave Gahan, che già inizia a scalpitare come un ossesso: il pubblico sembra proprio quello adatto per dare alla band le migliori soddisfazioni, e l'impressione è confermata dalla risposta entusiasta alle note di "The Dead of Night", il brano più cattivo presente nell'ultimo "Exciter", album semplicemente splendido che i fan di nuova e vecchia data hanno amato fin da subito. Si succede poi una sequenza di brani capolavoro dal nuovo e dal vecchio repertorio: la sensuale "The Sweetest Condition", le mitiche "Halo" e "Walking in my Shoes" e la versione completa di "Dream on" mandano letteralmente in delirio il pubblico parigino e noi con loro, perché l'ottima regia non si perde un momento clou ma anche la qualità audio e video è semplicemente magnifica e ci fa letteralmente immedesimare con quei fortunati. Basta solo aggiungere un frontman scatenato e carismatico come Dave e il gioco è fatto! Le successive cinque canzoni rallentano il ritmo facendo leva sulle proprie incredibili atmosfere: le doti vocali Gahan col passare degli anni e la rinuncia ai vecchi abusi sono migliorate parecchio e riesce ad emozionarci e catturare tutta la nostra attenzione con le versioni proposte della dolcissima "When the Body speaks" e della notturna "Waiting for the Night" - che con mia sorpresa sembra esser stato il brano più apprezzato dal pubblico; è finalmente il turno di Martin Gore alle vocals per la riproposizione delle romantiche "It doesn't matter Two", dal vecchio "Black Celebration", e "Breathe" sempe da Exciter. Dave torna alle vocals per quello che è stato indubbiamente uno dei brani più amati dell'ultimo album dei Depeche Mode, quella dolce e sensualissima "Freelove" intinta di atmosfere soul, nella quale spiccano le doti delle due coriste Jordan Bailey e Georgia Lewis. Semplicemente lodevoli sono le spettacolari immagini e giochi di luce con cui Corbijn e la sua troupe descrivono visualmente ogni singola canzone, a sottolineare come la band si distingua anche per la cura minuziosa dell'aspetto visivo, per garantire un'esperienza totale a chi assista ai suoi concerti. Da questo momento in poi la band ripropone solo i suoi vecchi classici, e il delirio inizia con "Enjoy the Silence", forse il loro brano più amato in assoluto, per proseguire con le immortali "I feel you" e "In your room" ("Zephyr mix", la versione del single quindi) , la divertente "It's no good" e una conclusione in grande stile con una perfetta riproposizione di "Personal Jesus". Ma come, finisce già? Ovviamente no, la band esce ma rientra subito per una serie di encore da brivido. Ed ecco che Martin esegue una perfetta versione della struggente "Home", per poi cedere il microfono a Dave per "Condemnation", riproposta forse in onore degli ospiti nella versione "Paris mix" e per due dei loro ultimi classici anni '80, vale a dire "Black Celebration" e una riproposizione extended di "Never let me down again" sulla falsariga di quella presente nel live "101" che strappa le ultime energie al pubblico e conclude con un trionfo e un sorriso di soddisfazione totale queste due ore di concerto. Si succede poi una sequenza di brani capolavoro dal nuovo e dal vecchio repertorio: la sensuale "The Sweetest Condition", le mitiche "Halo" e "Walking in my Shoes" e la versione completa di "Dream on" mandano letteralmente in delirio il pubblico parigino e noi con loro, perché l'ottima regia non si perde un momento clou ma anche la qualità audio e video è semplicemente magnifica e ci fa letteralmente immedesimare con quei fortunati. Basta solo aggiungere un frontman scatenato e carismatico come Dave e il gioco è fatto! Le successive cinque canzoni rallentano il ritmo facendo leva sulle proprie incredibili atmosfere: le doti vocali Gahan col passare degli anni e la rinuncia ai vecchi abusi sono migliorate parecchio e riesce ad emozionarci e catturare tutta la nostra attenzione con le versioni proposte della dolcissima "When the Body speaks" e della notturna "Waiting for the Night" - che con mia sorpresa sembra esser stato il brano più apprezzato dal pubblico; è finalmente il turno di Martin Gore alle vocals per la riproposizione delle romantiche "It doesn't matter Two", dal vecchio "Black Celebration", e "Breathe" sempe da Exciter. Dave torna alle vocals per quello che è stato indubbiamente uno dei brani più amati dell'ultimo album dei Depeche Mode, quella dolce e sensualissima "Freelove" intinta di atmosfere soul, nella quale spiccano le doti delle due coriste Jordan Bailey e Georgia Lewis. Semplicemente lodevoli sono le spettacolari immagini e giochi di luce con cui Corbijn e la sua troupe descrivono visualmente ogni singola canzone, a sottolineare come la band si distingua anche per la cura minuziosa dell'aspetto visivo, per garantire un'esperienza totale a chi assista ai suoi concerti. Da questo momento in poi la band ripropone solo i suoi vecchi classici, e il delirio inizia con "Enjoy the Silence", forse il loro brano più amato in assoluto, per proseguire con le immortali "I feel you" e "In your room" ("Zephyr mix", la versione del single quindi) , la divertente "It's no good" e una conclusione in grande stile con una perfetta riproposizione di "Personal Jesus". Ma come, finisce già? Ovviamente no, la band esce ma rientra subito per una serie di encore da brivido. Ed ecco che Martin esegue una perfetta versione della struggente "Home", per poi cedere il microfono a Dave per "Condemnation", riproposta forse in onore degli ospiti nella versione "Paris mix" e per due dei loro ultimi classici anni '80, vale a dire "Black Celebration" e una riproposizione extended di "Never let me down again" sulla falsariga di quella presente nel live "101" che strappa le ultime energie al pubblico e conclude con un trionfo e un sorriso di soddisfazione totale queste due ore di concerto.
