Il progetto del film apparteneva a Pietro Germi, che non ebbe però la possibilità di realizzarlo a causa della prematura scomparsa. Nel film ha origine il termine "supercazzola", utilizzato nel gergo comune per indicare un giro di parole privo di alcun senso, fatto allo scopo di confondere le idee al proprio interlocutore. Quattro inseparabili amici d'infanzia fiorentini sulla cinquantina affrontano i loro disagi con scherzi anche di cattivo gusto a danno di malcapitati. Il conte Raffaello Mascetti è un nobile decaduto che, dopo aver scialacquato due eredità (la sua e quella della moglie), è costretto a vivere dapprima ospite degli amici poi in uno scantinato (il cui fitto, a sua insaputa, è per due terzi corrisposto proprio dagli amici). Rambaldo Melandri è un anonimo architetto alla perenne ricerca di una donna, per la quale sarebbe anche disposto ad abbandonare i suoi amici, salvo ravvedersi all'ultimo momento. Giorgio Perozzi (voce narrante del film) è un redattore capo di cronaca che cerca di sfuggire la disapprovazione per la sua poca serietà e il disprezzo per le avventure extraconiugali che il figlio (terribilmente serio e accigliato, l'esatto opposto del padre) e la moglie gli riservano. Guido Necchi gestisce con la moglie Carmen un bar con sala da biliardo, puntuale covo d'incontro del gruppo d'amici. Ai quattro amici di sempre si aggiunge, nel corso della narrazione, il dottor professor Alfeo Sassaroli, brillante primario ospedaliero annoiato dalla professione, che diventerà in breve uno dei pilastri del gruppo e sotto la cui spinta le bravate prenderanno nuova vitalità. Possiede una Clinica in collina dove per la prima volta aveva incontrato gli altri quattro, malconci per una mai narrata zingarata; ha due figlie e una moglie chiamata Donatella di cui Melandri si innamora e che Sassaroli non esita ad abbandonargli, imponendogli anche tutto il mantenimento del resto del treno familiare cui la donna è avvezza, cosa che farà presto perdere la pazienza e le illusioni amorose all'architetto. Ammirati dalla spietatezza e dall'acume del primario, gli altri amici lo includono nel gruppo, celebrando il tutto con la celebre zingarata degli schiaffi ai partenti nella Stazione di Santa Maria Novella di Firenze. Nel corso del film i cinque colpiscono chiunque si presti alle ferocissime burle da loro chiamate "zingarate", dall'irruzione in una festa in una villa di perfetti sconosciuti, durante la quale il Necchi ha uno dei suoi celebri colpi di genio (avendo assolutamente bisogno del bagno preferisce usufruire il vasino del bambino), alla messinscena che fa temere agli abitanti di un paesello (ambientato a Calcata) la distruzione delle case e della chiesa per la costruzione di un'autostrada. Arrivano fino al punto di coinvolgere Righi, un anziano e pensionato cliente del bar del Necchi che colpisce l'attenzione degli amici per sua abitudine di consumare pasticceria a sbafo, credendo di non esser notato; verrà coinvolto in una lunghissima ed elaborata burla, in cui viene convinto ad entrare in una presunta banda di estortori in lotta con i marsigliesi. Terminata la giornata tutti decidono di finire la zingarata e decidono di andare a casa, ma Perozzi viene colpito da un infarto e muore sotto gli occhi degli amici, della moglie e del figlio Luciano. Anche in punto di morte è pronto a beffare il confessore, ma la tristezza dei suoi amici non proibirà loro di continuare ad esorcizzare la paura della morte e della vecchiaia incombente con una memorabile zingarata.
